THE TRIANGLE OF DEATH (January 30, 2014)
The Camorra mafia is in the news. They have buried millions of tons of toxic waste north of Naples. The region is now known as the Triangle of Death on account of an alarming rise in cancer cases. This is yet another story about unintended consequences, this time pernicious. And yet another story about human stupidity. For even the Camorra mafia would not engage in the illegal play with toxic waste if they had a clear idea of the consequences. Most of them are good Catholics, too. It is the stupidity that underlies this story, as well as many other stories of this kind. And stupidity can be defined as inability to understand the consequences of one’s action. The trouble is that it cannot be cured. Stupidity is inherent to the species, just like the upright posture or bifocal vision. After all, members of the Camorra mafia are nothing if not humans. Perfectly normal humans, that is. Alas, the Triangle of Death is much bigger than believed, for it encompasses us all.
