THE THOUSANDTH FAKE COMMENT (September 11, 2014)

One of the first things I do every morning is visit my Residua website and erase all the fake comments that have accumulated since the previous morning (“Fakers’ Hypertext,” August 14, 2014). All the comments come from peddlers of replica fashion products and a wide variety of pricy accessories. And they cite one of my pieces of writing day after day for nearly a month now (“Hypertext,” December 21, 1989). On some days, there are more than a hundred comments. This morning I found thirty-seven of them, and I immediately went to add the number to the spreadsheet I use to track the fake comments. To my surprise, I have erased exactly a thousand of them so far. Next to today’s date, the round number looked no less than ominous. I have always thought that the fakers come from China, Russia, and perhaps even India, but my spreadsheet suggests a new twist. Could the attack on my website have anything to do with Islamism? Is some Islamist group trying to scare the shit out of me? It did not take me long to shake off the awkward premonition, though. It must be chance. Pure chance. The thousandth fake comment has just happened to come on the thirteenth anniversary of the Twin Towers. Nothing but chance, to be sure.
