THE SECOND STAPLER (February 19, 2014)
Now that I spend more than half of my time in Zagreb, I realized that I needed another stapler. The one in Motovun is of no use to me much of the time. But I can hardly survive without a stapler nowadays. Every so often, I have to send something or other to one of the many government offices in Croatia, and I often must attach something of importance to my letters. Typically, these forms, of which there are zillions in this country. The second stapler turned out to be quite essential for two letters I would be sending tomorrow to the tax authorities in Pazin. Now that taxation is blooming in the capsizing country, the tax authorities in the administrative hub of central Istria have spread to two streets, and my letters will be going to both. Anyhow, I just acquired a tiny stapler that will suit my purposes rather well. Bureaucrats, I am ready for you! Come to think of it, a small printer would be quite useful, too. As well as a minuscule copying machine, or perhaps a scanner. This equipment would also require a desk and a chair. An office with a little filing cabinet would be handy, too. Not to worry, though. Sooner or later, I will be armed to the teeth. And the post office will be as busy as all hell.
