THE PRIME WORLD DESTINATION (July 10, 2014)

London is in the news. The Mastercard comes up with the annual list of top destinations around the world, and London beat Bangkok this year. According to the Global Destinations Cities Index, London is expected to receive close to nineteen-million visitors this year, which translates into some eleven-billion pounds in revenue. Bangkok, Paris, Singapore, and Dubai follow suit, in that order. Amazingly, Dubai is expected to receive around twelve-million visitors this year. Returning to London, its mayor, Boris Johnson, was delighted by the news. “Our city perfectly combines history, heritage, arts, and culture, not to mention vast amounts of green space and major events that are the envy of the planet,” he said. Well put, and especially the bits not mentioned. The news delighted me, too. Looking back, I was glad I had lived in the prime world destination for so many years. Looking forward, though, I was glad I would visit it never again. With more than eight-million inhabitants, the nineteen-million visitors is a dire prospect.
