Putin has signed today a thirty-year natural gas deal with China. The deal has been in the making for a full decade. A new pipeline will start delivering the gas to the burgeoning economy in about four years. The symbolic value of the deal is tremendous. Goodbye, Europe! Hello, Asia! And this is precisely why Putin has gone to China at this time. The Ukraine crisis has tipped the balance eastward, and Europe has been left dangling. Of course, there are many other sources of natural gas, but getting to them is another matter. As for Russia and China, there is one complete pipeline that runs all the way to China’s border. The Power of Siberia is its name. Extending the pipeline all the way into China has been central to today’s deal. Judging by what is known about it, the pipeline will be completed by about 2018.
