THE NEXT LANDSLIDE (November 13, 2014)
It has been raining and raining. The Mirna is overflowing every now and then, but the road passing under the Motovun hill has not been flooded yet. As I keep telling everyone in the hilltown, we are not in any danger of floods, but we will suffer from all sorts of landslides. And plenty of them. Indeed, a supporting wall collapses from time to time, but nothing serious has happened yet. It is only a question of time, though, for the amount of water that comes down per unit of time is unprecedented as of late. Our ancestors would have seen to it by now, but we are not clever enough to deal with good old water. Apparently, this is true across Istria, where there are medieval towns on many a hill. According to the leading local newspaper this morning, Buzet up the Mirna valley has just had a major landslide. More important, its town walls are in dire shape, and they will need some tender-loving care pretty soon. The article in question attributes many a crack in the walls mainly to age, but it also mentions abundant rains much of this year. Predictably, climate change is not even mentioned. The subject is eschewed with utmost care. The next landslide anywhere on the peninsula will be a big surprise to all concerned.
