Dmitry Kiselyov, a leading anchor on Russian state television, is in the news. When the Crimean referendum started in earnest yesterday, he came up with the following statement in front of the cameras: “Russia is the only country in the world realistically capable of turning the United States into radioactive ash.” He made the comment in support of his argument that the United States and president Barack Obama were living in fear of Russia led by president Vladimir Putin. His program was broadcast as the first exit polls showed an overwhelming majority of Crimeans voting to leave Ukraine and join Russia. It is good to remember that Kiselyov is in the know, too. In other words, the new cold war is definitely on. And the Crimean referendum was the turning point.
