THE LAST COMERS (November 1, 2014)
One of the leading Croatian newspapers announced today that Croatia is among the top countries in the world in terms of alcoholism. Thinking of American Indians and Australian Aborigines, I expected a good read. The article was a great disappointment, though. On top of poor writing, it provided no table supporting the argument. And so I went to the World Wide Web in search of pertinent data. To my surprise, Croatia is not even listed in many of the tables. Even after accession to the European Union, it remains unknown across much of the globe. At any rate, my impromptu hypothesis about Indians and Aborigines turned out not to be entirely wrong. I was thinking about Slavs, of course. The last to arrive in Europe, they have remained the most primitive of its denizens. Among much data supporting my thinking, I came across an interesting statistic having to do with the rise in drinking over the last fifteen years or so. And the biggest rise in drinking in the Twenty-First Century has occurred in Estonia, Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Poland, and Belarus. Interestingly, the biggest increase in drinking by type of drink is in beer while wine and spirits remain unchanged. Although Croatia is not in the above list, Slavs certainly are. It is good to remember that all the Baltic countries listed harbor a large proportion of Russians. In short, Russians are the winners, just as I have expected. The last comers for ever and ever.
