THE HUMAN GENOME (March 24, 2014)

The human genome is the complete set of genetic information for the human species. It consists of several billion deoxyribonucleic acid pairs. Differences between human individuals are on the order of one tenth of one percent, whereas differences between humans and their closest living relatives, such as chimpanzees, is about four percent. The price of sequencing an average human genome has plummeted from several million dollars to a few thousand dollars in recent years. Now, imagine that you are among the lucky ones who are in possession of a personal genome sequence. What in the world could you—or anyone else, for that matter—learn from it about your future? Given all of the above, you will learn next to nothing. Too many deoxyribonucleic acid pairs and too few differences between humans, that is. Why then the skyrocketing demand for a personal genome sequence? Because humans would give their all to know their future. For those who are not superstitious, molecular biology beats astrology by a wide margin. But there is hardly any difference.
