THE GARBAGE ALONG THE ROAD (November 21, 2014)

Whenever I walk up or down the Motovun hill, I am amazed by the amount of garbage strewn along the road. There are plastic bags of all sizes; beer cans and bottles; cardboard packaging of all shapes; plastic bottles and cups; and pieces of paper of all colors. The garbage is much less visible from a car rushing along, but it is impossible to miss on foot. It is literally everywhere. Every stretch of grass is littered with it. And so is every bush. As I was walking to Livade this morning, I asked myself a simple question out of the blue: why is there so much garbage along the road? And the answer came to me as if by magic: Istrians are very clean people. That explains it. Their houses are very clean, but their cars are even cleaner. Few people living on the peninsula could afford them even ten years ago, but now they are everywhere. Nowadays, almost every Istrian is a proud owner of a car. And they are kept as clean as clean can be. As soon as a snack is finished, the wrapping is tossed through the window. As soon as a can of beer is gulped down, it is tossed through the window. As soon as a box of cigarettes is emptied, it is tossed through the window. Garbage in the car is simply intolerable to clean Istrians. And that is the definite answer to my question about the garbage along the road.
