THE FIRST AND LAST WORD (May 6, 2014)

Sitting alone on the hotel terrace in the late afternoon, I am protected from the sun by the chestnut trees. The buildings surrounding the terrace protect me from the harsh wind, as well. But the sunshine reaches a planter not far from my table. The young leaves of a shrub in it shine bright. The fervent green is mesmerizing. Staring at it, I cannot but hum to myself over and over again. The first and last word is a godsend, indeed. And it comes forth all by itself. An unadulterated gift from within.
