THE ESTHETICS OF CLIMATE CHANGE (November 30, 2014)
The weather is weird. It is drizzly and foggy day after day. Although it is not cold, it is quite unpleasant to be outdoors. Everything is murky and damp. In short, it is ugly. Nay, disgusting. During the day, I close all the shutters on my house so as not to see anything around it. Even the Mirna valley is outright ugly in this miserable weather. And so I am delighted when it starts getting darker by the end of the day. Actually, I can hardly wait for the night. The darker, the better. No matter how wet it gets, at least it is out of sight. Rendered invisible by the darkness, the weather is a bit easier to bear. Come to think of it, ugliness may well be yet another aspect of climate change. Early on, unusual perforce equals ugly. But if the weather keeps changing all the time, as well as ever more dramatically, it cannot but strike me as ever more disgusting, as well. The esthetics of climate change is sure to become a favorite subject of discussion across the changing planet. And the past will be remembered by all and sundry as outright beautiful. Nay, gorgeous.
