THE DOWNING (July 18, 2014)

The Malaysia Airlines flight 17 is in the news. Which side shot it down? Why was it flying over the contested part of Ukraine? What is Putin’s next move in the war on Russia’s border? On top of all this, the situation in Gaza is getting out of hand. Israel is switching from air to ground assault. How far will the invasion go? What are the neighboring Arab countries likely to do in response? Why are both America and Europe so quiet about the hubbub? As questions such as these pile up, stockmarkets are plummeting. But the downing of the Malaysian aircraft with about three-hundred people on board has triggered the investor panic. Symbolic as it is, senseless murder of so many people has done the trick. All the previous days, the stockmarkets were as happy as happy can be in spite of dire news from both Ukraine and Gaza. After all, investors are only human. The symbolic race, as it were.
