THE CACOPHONY (November 29, 2014)
Plants on my terrace are in quite a bit of disagreement as to the season. The yucca is preparing to flower as though it is early spring. The wisteria is not flowering, but it has kept its leaves, which are still green. This would suggest late summer or early fall. And the bignonia has already shed all its leaves, as would be appropriate for late fall or early winter. It is similar in my garden. The three fledgling fig trees have shed their leaves, but everything else is luscious green. Indeed, even plants are confused, but each one in its own way. If they could talk, they would quarrel with each other like mad. “Spring!” one plant would yell. “Fall!” another one would reply with conviction. “Summer!” the third would chime in at the top of its voice. The cacophony would be deafening by now.
