SWEARWORDS (February 24, 2014)

I just learned from The Guardian that one in every thirteen messages on Twitter contains a swearword. Researchers at Wright State University in Ohio have gone through more than fifty-million tweets to come up with this result. What is more, they have come up with a ranking of the most common swearwords. The first is “fuck.” The second and third are “shit” and “ass.” And here is what follows in the ranking order: “”bitch,” “hell,” “whore,” “dick,” “piss,” and “pussy.” These nine swearwords make up more than ninety percent of the whole lot. Now, I am happy about the first three swearwords, but I am pretty confused by a number of those that follow. For example, I had no idea that “bitch” was a swearword, let alone “hell” and “whore.” Perhaps more important, I am amazed that “prick” and “cunt” are not among the swearwords listed. Also, where are “asshole” and “fart” on this list? All in all, I am quite disappointed by the performance of my fellow humans. Relish your swearwords, motherfuckers!
