The one and only reason for my trip to Trieste earlier today was the dwindling batch of Jew’s harps in my possession (“A Hundred Jew’s Harps,” April 26, 2014). Rudi Handjal was a great help not only in getting me there, but also in finding shops with musical instruments. We quickly learned about three of them, and we visited them all. There were no Jew’s harps on offer in the first shop; there were some in the second one; and the third one was apparently closed for good. Roughly speaking, there are three sizes of my favorite instrument: small, medium, and large. The small ones have a high-pitched sound, and are best for solo playing; the large ones are good for accompaniment, for they have a low-pitched sound; and the medium ones are someplace in between. The only shop that had Jew’s harps had medium and large ones only. And so I bought four of the medium ones. As far as I am concerned, though, they are neither here nor there. To make a long story short, I will have to return to Italy pretty soon in search of small Jew’s harps. They must be available in smaller towns around Trieste. And I want ninety-six of them as soon as possible.
