SLIPPING (December 15, 2014)
Knowing that I was going to Zagreb this morning, a couple of people offered me a ride to the bus station in Livade yesterday evening. I thanked them both. I liked to walk, I explained. Five people driving past offered me a ride while I was walking, but I thanked them all with the same explanation. I noticed that the road down the Motovun hill was unusually slippery as soon as I started, though. It did not rain, but there was a dense fog all night long. The road was completely wet. The asphalt is worn out in many places, as many a driver complains. On top of that, the dirt that comes down the hill makes the road even more slippery in some places. Wearing a good pair of walking shoes, I was more careful than I usually am on my way to Livade. And yet I slipped and fell at some point. I could not believe myself as I was getting up, both of my hands covered with mud. My right leg was bloody just below the knee. The fall did not slow me down, but it started me thinking. I must be more careful this time of year. And ever more so as the years go by. Slipping can get me in real trouble. For crying out loud, I am not a youngster any more.
