Thus the title of a book I just spotted in a bookstore window. It struck me as so unusual and even puzzling that I stopped in my tracks. I gave the book all the attention I thought it deserved. The front cover was quite simple and stark, which only added to my curiosity. “Russian grammar,” I caught myself thinking, “what could that mean?” It was as though Russian logic or perhaps reasoning was involved. It took me a few seconds to understand that the book was about, well, Russian grammar and nothing else. As I was walking away from the bookstore, I wondered at my confusion. Anything Russian apparently strikes me as a bit suspicious. A bit sinister. And a bit perilous. I expect the likes of Putin behind anything Russian. Including Russian grammar, of all things. “It must be the American hat I am wearing,” I realized at last. Which enticed a big smile that stayed with me for quite a while.
