ROBIN WILLIAMS? (August 12, 2014)
Robin Williams is in the news. Most of the articles about his demise, most likely by his own hand, are saccharine to boot. Since I do not watch television and rarely go to the movies, I had hard time placing him. When I eventually did, I got even more annoyed by the avalanche of tastelessness. Nay, kitsch. Having gone through a number of online newspapers before going to sleep, I could not but notice many a photograph of the late actor at different stages of his long career. I skipped all of the associated articles, it goes without saying. But I was flabbergasted to come across one of these photographs in the online edition of The Economist, of all places. In one fell swoop, the mighty newspaper plummeted in my eyes. Robin Williams? And I wonder when I will visit its website again. All things considered, it might well take me a fortnight. But the newspaper will never be the same for me, I am quite sure. Once mighty, it has joined the newsmongering throng once and for all.
