The only grocery store in the historic part of Motovun has changed operators. The transition has gone very smoothly. It took place on May Day, which is a public holiday in Croatia. The store has not changed much, either. All the elderly people from the hilltown who do not drive, like myself, will be happy with the smoothness of the transition. But the change is of some interest in its own right. The old operator was from Pazin, and the new one is from Buzet. And this is what can be expected of all the stores, cafés, restaurants, apartments or houses for rent, and hotels in Motovun. Having become a tourist attraction to be reckoned with, it has become attractive to both owners and operators living some way away. Only the properties will stay where they are. In the case of the grocery store, the owner of the property lives in Motovun, and in the same building, but an increasing number of other businesses have both the owner and the operator living elsewhere in Istria, Croatia, or even abroad. And this is the hilltown’s imminent future, for it is quite deserted out of the tourist season. There are fewer and fewer families with children in Motovun. The elderly are dying one by one and leaving their houses empty. In a few short years, it will be a ghost town during the winter months. In business terms, it will become pure real estate.
