The World War I is in the news, and especially in Austria and Germany that lost it. This year’s anniversary goes much deeper than usual, and not only on account of the two zeroes. Nowadays, everyone is looking for parallels with today’s world. America joined the World War I in 1917. On March 5 of that year, Woodrow Wilson famously declared: “We are provincials no longer.” Less than a month later, he asked the Congress to declare war against Germany. In many ways, World Wars I and II made America. As well as pummeled Germany. It is thus not surprising that today’s subterranean parallels have to do with China. The political elite of the rising giant must know Wilson’s line by heart. It is only a question of who and when will utter it once again, albeit with a historical twist all its own.
