ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN (June 10, 2014)

Violence against women is in the news. And I am happy to report that the only sort of violence involving women I have experienced is when I was attacked by my two wives some twenty years apart. In both cases, I did my best to overpower them rather than to hurt them. I pinned them down to the floor to stop them from hurting me with their fingernails and teeth. In both cases, I got angry enough to hit them back, but I relented. Once they realized they were powerless, I helped them to their feet. Every single time I experienced my own violence, I was facing men. And I wanted to kill them, no less. This has happened at least ten times in my life, but I have never done any real harm to another man. In the end, something has always stopped me from the final blow or grip. Now, I am not trying to say that I am a good guy. Far from it. I am only reporting my own experiences with violence. But it is anyone’s guess what the future holds. For humans and violence are a perfect match, and I am only human.
