Mental illness among children is in the news. Public health authorities are getting worried by recent trends, which are reportedly quite stunning. In particular, there is a rapid rise in self-harm and suicidal thoughts among children. These trends have been picked up in a number of developed countries. At present, the main culprit is the World Wide Web. Children are overexposed to it to their own detriment, the argument goes. Social networks are the pits. And so on, and so forth. I cannot but think of the collective human intelligence, though. In my mind, climate change is the culprit. The younger you are, the harder hit you will eventually be. This form of intelligence is not about thinking; rather, it is about feeling the imminent future. After all, humans are only animals. And animals can feel danger well before it materializes. Returning to children, who are closest to animals among us, they can teach us a great deal about the future. Public health authorities beware, for mental illness among children may well be an early warning for us all.
