ON MOTOR VEHICLES (July 4, 2014)

I hate cars. As I am walking along the periphery of the pedestrian zone in central Zagreb, where cars are a special nuisance, I scowl at them with relish. The bigger they are, the more I hate them. Nowadays, the vaunted Sports Utility Vehicles are my favorite cars to abhor. And I despise their drivers, too. The more expensive the car, the more annoying they seem to me. The smugness in their demeanor is often unbearable. Also, I hate trucks and buses, but my feelings are a bit less venomous in their case. I hate motorcycles and scooters, too. Once again, I dislike most the biggest among them, and they appear to be growing by the day. On top of that, they are ever louder. Actually, anything that burps, farts, rattles, and whines makes me furious beyond belief. The odors they emanate disgust me, as well. In short, I hate all motor vehicles running on oil and gas derivatives. And I hate electric cars and motorcycles ahead of time. I can imagine the smugness of their “non-polluting” owners well in advance. The motor vehicles strike me as the very worst this civilization has come up with to the detriment of us all. Besides, the highways are the most despicable structures ever built by the human species. And they will survive the motor vehicles by a couple of centuries at least. But I already take solace in my vision of the not-so-distant future. By and by, it is ever crisper in my mind’s eye. I can see rusting wrecks surrounded by drooping ruins, highways overgrown with creepers, and crumpled bridges punctured by tall trees. And I can hear birds chirping among the leftovers of this silly world. Whispering breeze completes my vision. The bliss.
