OCTOBER IN AUGUST, AGAIN (August 16, 2014)
The day is strange. It started sunny but nippy. The sky was clear most of the morning, but it started getting cloudy close to noon. The sky darkened pretty quickly, and it started raining soon afterwards. It is early afternoon, and the rain seems to have settled in for the rest of the day. It is quite foggy, as well. Looking around Motovun, one would bet it was October rather than August. In fact, August would never even cross one’s mind on a lousy day like this one. The temperature in my house is still at twenty-four degrees Celsius because of the thick stone walls, but the temperature outside is at eighteen degrees right now. By this evening, it is sure to drop by four or five degrees at least. July was preposterously wet and cold, and so has been August so far. Tired as I am of such inane comparisons, I find myself thinking of October in August once again (“October in August,” August 5, 2014). As it turns out, that is the simplest way for me to express my surprise with the weather. Again and again. Thinking of surprises yet to come, I console myself that November and December, let alone January and February, are some way off still. Hooray!
