OBESITY AMONG WOMEN (September 12, 2014)
When I sit at Marko’s on the lower square and watch the tourist crowds, I am often amazed at the number of couples in which the woman is fat or even obese and the man is quite slim. The opposite is rather rare, at least among the tourists who visit the hilltown. By and large, slim women go for slim men. “I’m starving,” you can almost hear one of the obese women snarl at their ever-so-concerned men as they mosey around restaurants on offer, “and you can go screw yourself!” As soon as they find a suitable table, she lets herself go. Bread and olive oil are just fine before the proper meal arrives. “Delicious,” she grunts whenever she gets a chance while he nods delicately. And this strikes me as an entirely new social phenomenon. Is this yet another sign of women’s growing prominence in everything under the sun? If it is, obesity among women will skyrocket in the years to come. And how. Dominant at last, as well as once again, they will look like Venus of Willendorf one and all.
