I have been daydreaming about a favicon of my own for at least a year now. The term is a shortening for “favorite icon,” and it stands for the icon that appears next to a bookmarked website in a bookmark bar on a computer screen. On my own bookmark bar, the Residua website is one of the very few ones listed without a favicon of its own. In this connection, I first contact Paul Bazay, who transformed my website into a blog more than six years ago. For some reason, he has done nothing about it yet. Thus I wrote about it to my No. 1 son earlier today. He knows a great deal about the World Wide Web, and I hope he will be able to help. This is not a pressing matter, but I would still like a favicon of my own sometime next year.

My design for the favicon is simple enough. It is square. The background color is the ocher that serves as the background for the website itself. A capitalized letter “r” is in the middle of the square. Once again, the typeface is the same as that used in the website, but there is a round dot in the center of the semicircle in the upper part of the letter. Given the size of the favicon, all these elements must be just right. They will require quite a bit of tweaking, which is why I need help from someone both astute and meticulous. The design has a touch of Sanskrit in it, it goes without saying. In my mind, it is associated with the sacred word, Aum.

Now, I feel kind of funny bothering my No. 1 son with my silly favicon. To begin with, he is quite busy, and especially around this time of year. An additional chore, and a petty one, could not but be a bother. On top of that, I am kind of surprised with myself. Favicons are useful for websites that are indeed favorite with many people, whereas my own website is a minor distraction for a few people at best. In short, I feel that my wish is too cheeky by half. Even though my magnum opus is of central importance to me, it is a bit funny to be pushing it into the limelight in such a silly way. Favicon, schmavicon. And yet, I cannot shake it out of my mind. One way or another, I would like a favicon of my own sometime next year, as I already said.

Addendum (July 20, 2017)

After much fumbling and some fiddling, my favicon is in place at last. With the help of my No. 1 son and Paul Bazay, it is a capitalized letter “r” in Times font on a square the same color as the pages on my Residua website. Period. As it turned out, there was too little space for a round dot in the center of the semicircle in the upper part of the letter. Anyhow, I am quite happy with the design. It fits my site perfectly. And now I know how the favicon for my Ca’ Bon Gallery site will look. It will be a capitalized letter “b” in a square the same color as the first one. Both of my sites use the same font and have the same background color, it goes without saying. Siniša Pintar manages the other site, and I just sent him an electronic-mail message with my wishes. Soon enough, the two sites will spell my initials. Surprise, surprise. The few people who know me well will crack a smile upon seeing the new favicons next to each other.
