MOTOVUN DUCAT (October 9, 2014)
Quite by chance, today I learned about the Bristol pound. “Our city, our money,” or so the new pound is promoted by the enthusiasts. According to its official website, Bristol pound is the United Kingdom’s first city-wide local currency, the first to have electronic accounts managed by a regulated financial institution, and the first that can be used to pay some local taxes. It is run as a partnership between the Bristol Pound Community Interest Company and Bristol Credit Union. And it is a not-for-profit social enterprise. Wonderful stuff. It did not take me long to think of Motovun’s local currency, as well. Not surprisingly, its name was pretty obvious: Motovun ducat. Or ducato de Montona in Venetian dialect. It would be municipality-wide in this case. One more time, our motto came to my mind in a jiffy: “Our hilltown, our money.” All that remains to be done is to set up a not-for-profit social enterprise to run the new currency. Motovun ducat is within an easy reach. Any takers?
