MOTIONLESSNESS (August 1, 2014)

As I sit on my terrace and stare at the Mirna valley below, I see all sorts of creatures on top of the stone parapet in front of me. Most of them are insects, but there is an occasional lizard, too. They move in fits and starts, but they are completely motionless in between. Whenever I spot a lizard, I make sure not to make the slightest move. In spite of my long limbs and my huge eyes, they come very close to me. Aware of a puzzling presence but unsure of its disposition, they cock their heads to see me better. After their brief inspection, they scuttle away just as they have appeared. Motionlessness is the oldest trick in the book, too. That is how lizards catch insects, their staple food. And that is how cats catch lizards, as well, albeit just for their entertainment. But all I want is to see the assembled creatures as well as possible. Besides, being motionless is an amazing pleasure in itself. This is where all the creatures that frequent the stone parapet on my terrace must be forever in the dark.
