MISINFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (December 1, 2014)
There is a popular myth that Muhammad is Britain’s most popular boy’s name. Apparently, this is not yet the case. According to the best data that can be found on the World Wide Web, the three most popular boy’s names in Britain are Oliver, Jack, and Harry. And they are as British as names come. Muhammad is only in the fifteen place at this point in time. Interestingly, Mohammed is in the twenty-third place. In short, the myth is nothing but a myth. Whether or not either of these two spellings of the Muslim name will ever become Britain’s most popular boy’s name remains to be seen. At any rate, it is amazing how myths of this ilk come into being and propagate far and wide. Social networks on the web provide an ideal environment for them, to be sure. Add the growing fear of Islam, and the sky is the limit. Which only goes to show one of the dangers of information technology at this day and age. Misinformation technology would be a much more appropriate name for it, no doubt. Unfortunately, the difference between information and misinformation is rarely as easy to establish as in the case of Britain’s most popular boy’s name.
