MILLENNIALS VERSUS BABYBOOMERS (July 9, 2014)

The Pew Research Center in Washington, DC, has come up with an interesting investigation into social and demographic trends underlying politics. Generations, like people, have personalities, they claim. Political orientations are forged between the ages of fourteen and twenty-four. Much of their research is focusing on so-called Millennials, the American teens and twenty-somethings. But my thoughts immediately went to my own generation, the babyboomers. Indeed, as I like to repeat, my political orientation was forged by the Sixties, and especially the key year of that fabulous decade, 1968. But many others in America and Europe were between fourteen and twenty-four at that time. In fact, we are talking about the largest generation ever. Stretching between 1946 and 1964, it is humongous. And it will be about and around for another twenty to forty years. One way or another, the political orientations of all of these people were shaped by the Sixties. If there is any generation that Millennials will have to contend with, it is my own. Millennials versus babyboomers, as it were. And it will be an amazing political show to watch, I am quite sure. Aaargh!
