“The wall came down! The wall came down!” I wrote gleefully twenty-five years ago (“Die Mauer,” November 10, 1989). “But what will become of all the lizards and mice and spiders that made it their home?” Short as it is, this celebration of the wall’s demise hits the nail on the head. The lizards and mice and spiders behind the Iron Curtain of old quickly took leading positions in so many political parties formed soon after its fall. And many of them are still ruling the roost across Eastern Europe, including former Yugoslavia. As is usually the case with humans, only death will stop them in their ways. Alas, their offspring is upon us already! Lizards and mice and spiders forever.
