LEONARDO DICAPRIO AND I (February 11, 2014)
On my way through the center of Zagreb, I walk past a large poster in front of a store selling fancy wristwatches for men. It shows Leonardo DiCaprio with one of the watches on offer. I despise the actor, whom I have never seen on the screen. His brattish face only gets on my nerves. And I despise all watches with even greater passion. They are meant for slaves, after all. A moment later, I find myself ruminating about the amount of money he got for the ad. A couple of million dollars? Soon enough, I turn to the amount of money I would ask for the ad, let alone for wearing any watch, no matter how fancy. “Ah,” I boast to myself without much thought, “there’s no money I would accept for the misery!” Only another moment later, I find myself reconsidering my boast. “I would wear one of these contraptions for the money needed to persuade my beloved to leave Croatia and settle someplace else to our liking for the rest of our days,” I conclude pretty quickly. And then I remember my assessment of DiCaprio’s take for the ad. A couple of million dollars would surely suit my purposes, as well. Hey, it is high time to get in touch with watchmakers of renown. Any takers?
