KNEES AND ELBOWS (August 6, 2014)

The hailstorm that devastated many a vineyard, orchard, and olive grove around Motovun three days ago also clobbered the last lavender bush on my terrace. About a third of the long spikes bearing flowers were broken by hailstones. Afterwards, the bush was all knees and elbows. I thought of leaving it like that for a while, for it was quite a sight in its own right, but I changed my mind earlier today. Many of the whorls were drying up already. And so I harvested all the broken spikes and took the whorls apart. Each of them has a large number of pods that give all the fragrance lavender is famous for. The pods ended up in a large glass dish that rests on my dining table. It was a pleasurable task. Hours later, I smell my hands every now and then. Wow! The unexpected lavender harvest was a godsend. Whenever I wish to boost the fragrance on my fingers, I go to the dining table and gently squeeze a bunch of just harvested pods. The knees and elbows on the lavender bush pop up in my mind’s eye each and every time.
