JOLLY MISANTHROPY (February 6, 2014)

In this morning’s electronic mail, I found a message from Tomislav Longinović, or Tom Long for short, a friend who teaches at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. It contains a link to The Onion (www.theonion.com), which is dubbed as America’s finest news source. “Apropos your jolly misanthropy,” Tom comments briefly. The article’s title is funny enough: “Distant Planet Terrified it Might Be Able to Someday Support Human Life.” It is an interview with WR 67c, an earth-like planet from the Gamma Velorum star system, which is about one-thousand and one-hundred light-years away. “Honestly, I really wouldn’t mind having certain living organism,” WR 67c said. “Just not humans,” the planet quickly added. “Seriously, anything but those parasites.” Lovely. And right up my alley. Indeed, misanthropy is best when outright jolly. Or, as I like to put it, humans are for fun. Every other form of misanthropy is just blah. As well as annoying. Nay, a pain in the ass. Many thanks, Tom!
