I have been writing my Residua for close to thirty-nine years, and I have been retired for nearly eleven years. My retirement amounts to twenty-eight percent of the entire period. And how has it contributed to my magnum opus? This question popped up in my mind a short while ago, and I immediately went to my writing record. The results are pretty interesting, too. First, no less than sixty-two percent of all pieces of writing have been written since my retirement. Second, fifty-seven percent of all words written come from this period. By the way, the two percentages show that my pieces have gotten shorter over the years. But the results demonstrate that I have written more than a half of everything in my Residua in a bit more than a quarter of the time I have been contributing to it. To wit, my decision to retire early turns out to have been felicitous. Nay, fortuitous. Had I retired even earlier, the results would have been so much better. Alas!
