There was an earthquake in Istria around eleven o’clock this morning. I was having my morning coffee at Marko’s at the time, but I did not feel it at all. Everyone I talked to a quarter of an hour later told me that it was felt quite strongly all around Motovun. As I drink Amaro with my morning coffee, I joke that it must have helped me. In fact, I did not feel a thing. I wonder where the epicenter was, though. Chances are the earthquake had nothing to do with Istria. And Amaro is quite popular across the peninsula.

Addendum (April 23, 2014)

The epicenter was in Ilirska Bistrica in Slovenia, which is some forty kilometers northeast from Motovun. It was two kilometers under the earth’s surface. The magnitude was 4.4 on the Richter scale. The earthquake took place a couple of minutes before eleven o’clock local time. And where did I learn all this? On the United States Geological Survey’s website tracking earthquakes around the globe. The information appeared less than half an hour after the event, but it took Slovene and Croatian authorities more than an hour to come up with the same. It must have been Amaro once again.
