IN HEAT (February 27, 2014)

Sitting in an outdoor café in the center of Zagreb, I am watching a male golden retriever in heat. Its master is waiting for someone at a street corner, and the dog is free to roam. Its penis is sticking out for everyone to see, but it is not aggressive. Not at all. Whenever another dog trots past on a leash, it approaches it from behind and sniffs its privates. Most dogs do not pay it much attention. If they do, their masters pull them away without a word. But I am amazed at the simplicity and honesty of the whole thing. The dog is in heat, and any other dog can figure it out at once. If an interested female comes along, the deal can be done right then and there. If not, there is no problem. Another female is always just behind the corner. Everything is out in the open. There are no hidden intentions and no attempts to figure out what the actual intentions may be. It is only the masters who spoil the straightforward intercourse between dogs in their care. And I am squarely on the dogs’ side.
