HOPING FOR GERMANY (January 13, 2014)
Having returned to my beloved’s apartment with all sorts of stuff for us both, I notice one thing that connects nearly everything I have bought today: Germany. Most are not only German company products, but they are also made in Germany. This surely reflects Croatia’s “historic” friendship with Europe’s flagship, but it also reflects the quality of products in question, for neither my beloved nor I could care less where the stuff we buy is coming from. Looking around the apartment with a different eye, I am quite surprised by the variety of German products in sight. They range from toilet paper to breakfast cereals, from magic markers to lighters, from writing pads to knapsacks, from housecleaning liquids to beer glasses, from chocolate to toothpaste, from bathroom soap to sports clothes. Anyway, I am kind of glad for Germany. All I can hope for at this juncture is that German producers will keep up the quality of everything we buy. Go Germany, go! But these unexpected thoughts make me quite uneasy, too. Hoping for Germany strikes me as pretty pitiful. Nay, contemptible.
