HAPPILY DISGUSTED (April 1, 2014)
Scientists from Ohio State University have mapped all facial expressions that go with twenty-one emotions, reports The Guardian today. Here is the full list of emotional states identified by the scientists from facial expressions: happy, sad, fearful, angry, surprised, disgusted, happily surprised, happily disgusted, sadly fearful, sadly angry, sadly surprised, sadly disgusted, fearfully angry, fearfully surprised, fearfully disgusted, angrily surprised, angrily disgusted, disgustedly surprised, appalled, hating, and awed. According to the lead scientist, Alex Martinez, these facial expressions and emotions are expressed in the same way by nearly everyone, “at least in our culture.” Now, the first thing that came to my mind as I browsed through the article was that there would soon appear a French novel dedicated to these twenty-one expressions. Who will the writer be, though? As I was thinking about French writers, the expression on my face revealed that I was happily disgusted by my idle ruminations.
