It is wonderful to read that Albert Einstein was most likely correct when he postulated gravitational waves almost a century ago. That was in 1916, to be exact. Predicted by his general theory of relativity, these are ripples that propagate through the space-time continuum. There has been indirect evidence that they existed, but now there are rumors that they have actually been detected by American scientists. Therefore, a bunch of Nobel prizes in physics is expected pretty soon. Except for Einstein himself, my first reaction to the news was lukewarm at best. Given the dire shape in which the planet finds itself right now, who the hell cares about yet another piece of evidence buttressing the general theory of relativity? It did not take me long to reconsider my point of view, though. For crying out loud, Einstein came up with his prediction right in the middle of World War I! Although millions of people were perishing all around him, the great physicist was free to ponder the mysteries of the universe. Perhaps the World War III will be yet another opportunity for Einstein’s successors to come up with new revelations similar to gravitational waves. Happy thoughts, these.
