This time around, Ivan Jakovčić has made it into the European Parliament at long last. Last year, he just missed it. Now that he is neither the governor of Istria nor the chief of the Istrian Democratic Assembly, the leading party on the peninsula, he has nothing better to do than to engage all the other veterans of European politics who crowd the parliament. And he appears to be very well suited for the tasks ahead. Europe is being splintered into ever-smaller bits and pieces, and that is precisely his forte. Splintering is his art, as it were. He has been dedicated to Istrian autonomy for a couple of decades already, and autonomy is the word across the sub-continent nowadays. In his mind, the ideal political entity is the size of Istria. A couple of hundred-thousand inhabitants, that is. With some luck, the European Parliament will splinter the twenty-eight countries presently in the Union into tens of thousands of autonomous entities of the ideal size, at least according to him. Good riddance, Ivan Jakovčić! And have much fun with splintering far away from home.
