GOOD JOB, FOREIGNERS! (January 22, 2014)

One of the leading Croatian newspapers announces today that property sales to foreigners have declined from year to year ever since the onset of the global financial crisis in late 2008. The data reported in the article fit what I know about Motovun and surrounding towns in Istria. By now, the property market in the hilltown is completely dead. Notably, the expected increase of property sales since Croatia’s entry into the European Union has never taken place. Even more important, there is no reason to expect any increase at this time. Be that as it may, I was a joy to read the article. “Good job, foreigners!” I felt like exclaiming. “Croatia is the worst place imaginable where to do any kind of business, let alone buy property!” The funny bit in my message to foreigners is that I somehow felt they would surely get it by some miracle. “Spare yourselves the trouble,” I concluded with a smirk on my face.
