GOOD BOY (March 6, 2014)
Whenever I hear a motorcycle roar past my beloved’s apartment building in Zagreb, and especially late at night, I always hiss the same command: “Die!” And they die, albeit never within sight, which would give me immense pleasure. Each time I see an article about a motorcyclist’s death, I rejoice: “Good boy, you did as I commanded!” I just discovered another article of this ilk in one of the leading Croatian newspapers, and I went through all the photographs available in its online edition. The accident happened well past midnight last night. The wide street in New Zagreb across the Sava River is completely empty. The motorcycle is resting on its side. According to the article, it is a powerful Kawasaki. Covered with plastic, a dead body is resting some distance away from it. Apart from both of them, there lies an empty helmet. Alas, it was not even tied! “Good boy,” I keep muttering as I go through the photographs. “You did just as I commanded without hurting anyone else!”
