Images from the global soccer tournament in Brazil are all over the World Wide Web. The most popular sport in the world draws many a visitor to all sorts of pages. But there is one thing that I notice without really looking: a large proportion of black or mulatto players in every photograph I chance across. And many a team with a good number of them has nothing whatsoever to do with Africa. In fact, a surprising number of European teams have a large proportion of black and mulatto players. In some of them, they actually dominate the entire team. Which only goes to show that Africans are very good at soccer, as well as many other sports, no matter which country they happen to be playing for at present. Why do they not celebrate their collective prowess, though? Is the main reason for this that they are fearful of provoking racist outbursts in countries for which they play? Silly questions, to be sure, and especially now that most European countries are contemplating harsh immigration quotas focusing on Africa. Except in soccer and other sports that are emotionally tied to national pride, that is.
