FREEDOM IN CRIME (February 13, 2014)

Every online newspaper I open reports on yet another scam, confidence trick, fraud, diddle, swindle, con, fiddle, sting, racket, shady deal, or rip-off. Most of these are in banking and finance, but no other walk of life is spared. On the other end of the vast spectrum of human activity, the art world is also steeped in criminal deeds of every description. Humans are thieves, it goes without saying (“Born Thieves,” October 3, 2012). But global capitalism only buttresses this universal human trait. It widens the scope of unhindered criminal activity. It smashes all the fences to their spread across the entire planet. In this sense, capitalism is perfectly in tune with the human propensity to cheat and steal. In the last analysis, it is the champion of freedom in crime. The champion of everything human, that is. But it is time for me to stop. For I sound like an enthusiast of global capitalism, no less. Even worse, I sound like an enthusiast of the human species. All I am actually enthusiastic about is the realization that there is such a fine match between the two.
