George Bush Junior is in the news again. His portraits of famous men, including his father and Putin, are all over the World Wide Web. Apparently, he has taken up painting and has hired a personal coach to improve his style. A bit more surprising, his opinion poll ratings in America have improved on account of his artistic debut, albeit only slightly. But The Guardian is pretty tough today about Bush’s art. “This is the art of Forrest Gump,” declares one of the newspaper’s critics. Well put, too. The portraits are nothing if not atrocious. Pitifully atrocious, in fact. They say a good deal about the famous painter, though. The painter as a person, that is. Simply put, America had Forrest Gump for president for two full terms. Knowing what he had done to make America despised across the globe in those eight years, one still feels relieved upon seeing his paintings. Given Bush’s creativity, we got pretty lucky. Had he had a chance to let it rip during his presidency, now we would all look just like his portraits.
