COMMAND AND CONTROL (November 4, 2014)

The World Wide Web is under attack as of late. According to the media, it has become the main tool of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Command and control is bantered about as if the world depends on it and on it alone. Social networks such as Facebook are attracting special attention. Having been seized by the forces of evil, they are ever-more suspect around the globe. Paranoia, in short. If the Internet were such a boon for the forces of evil, why would it not be a boon for the forces of good, as well? The same holds for any tool that can easily turn into a weapon, such as a staff or knife. But paranoia is beyond argument, to be sure. It is squarely in the sphere of emotions. All it will achieve in the not-so-long run is to clamp down on the only tool that still smacks of freedom in this failing civilization of ours. In the end, the World Wide Web will be seized by the tyrants rather than the terrorists. But this will happen no matter what, and it is thus high time to abandon all hope. To hell with command and control!
