BON ISLAND (December 18, 2014)

Branko Kolarević sent me an electronic-mail message with a funny subject: “Bon Island.” I had no idea what the message could be about. It contained a link to a website advertising Koh Bon or Bon Island near Phuket in Thailand. It attracts divers. There is a restaurant on it now, but the island is too small for a settlement. I went to Google Translate at once. Koh means “island” in Thai, but Bon is apparently just a name, for there is no translation for it. I thanked Branko and promised swift action: “I’ll go there at once and claim the island!” Kidding aside, I was in Phuket twenty-five years ago, and the images of the sandy beaches, the sea, the palm trees, the sky, and the long wooden boats with pointed prows decorated with flowers immediately jogged my memory. Heaven itself. Having an island to my name would suit me just fine, too. But it did not take me long to leave the World Wide Web and turn off my laptop. Nowadays, Thailand is close enough to be a real tease. And it is dangerous to play with the idea of heaven on earth bearing your own name.
