BLAMING IMPUDENCE (September 9, 2014)
Ocean acidification is in the news. The oceans have not been as acid as they are right now for hundreds of millions of years. Surging levels of carbon dioxide are behind it. Ocean acidification goes together with global warming. Together, they bring great danger for future generations. All this is coming out ahead of the twenty-third summit on climate change called by Ban Ki-moon, the secretary general of the United Nations, which will take place later this month in New York. The objective of the summit is to prepare for the Paris meeting next year, which is expected to forge a historic climate deal to take effect in 2020. Time to act is now, all the articles on the subject insist. Blaming ignorance will no longer do. And yet, they can hardly be found in the online newspapers I regularly read. In fact, they are buried under a pile of more exciting news. The crises in Ukraine and the Middle East dominate all else. And there is a load of cultural and sports events to cover, as well. In short, neither New York nor Paris meetings are likely to get anywhere. Few will pay them any attention, anyway. “Don’t bore us with this crap,” one can almost hear the collective sigh, “we’re only human!” This suggests that blaming impudence rather than ignorance will be the favorite excuse in the years to come.
